Empowering Girls through STEM
Presenter: Tech Department
Audience: ES/MS/HS Faculty & Administrators
At Carol Morgan School we meet student desire for service learning opportunities in a unique way— by partnering the Robotics team with local Peace Corps Volunteers to distribute Lego Mind-storm Robotics kits to students in marginalized communities. The kits spread STEM skills, and the distribution provides an opportunity for impact service learning, with a special emphasis on providing leadership opportunities for teenage girls. We trained Peace Corps Volunteers on our campus, and will later follow up in communities to ensure continued success. This gives our students the opportunity to interact with rural communities while promoting spatial reasoning, critical thinking, mathematics, and physics. Introducing the kits specifically to groups of teenage girls allows our students to connect with undeserved communities and transfer their knowledge of STEM skills. Participants will leave the workshop understanding how they can use Lego kits to further their service learning programs.

Using QR Codes to Enhance Learning Across the Curriculum
Presenter: Technology Department
Audience: ES/MS/HS Faculty & Administrators
QR Codes are proving to be a great tool in which to share information. You can project them on screens, add them to worksheets, post them in the classroom or around school, or bring life, using voice or video, to a one dimensional project. When students see a QR code it adds to their curiosity to find out the mystery behind the black and white squares. Encouraging the use of internet-enabled devices in and out of the classroom, the use of QR codes make sense as a way of speeding up the transfer of multimedia content. You will see and experiment with activities that can easily be replicated in multiple subject areas and grade levels. If time allows, participants will create a code for a lesson or activity.
